The Mostra welcomes and highlights new filmmakers from various countries. In the 48th edition, 131 films are in the New Directors Competition: filmmakers presenting their first or second feature film. The titles in this section compete for the Bandeira Paulista Trophy.

During the first week of screenings, the public votes on the films competing for the award. The works with the best ratings are presented to the Jury, which chooses the feature film winners of the Bandeira Paulista Trophy - a creation of artist Tomie Ohtake - in the best film category and other categories.

The jury for the 48th Mostra includes Brazilian actress Camila Pitanga, Portuguese actor and filmmaker Gonçalo Waddington, curator and producer Hebe Tabachnik, producer Kyle Stroud, Iranian director and writer Mohsen Makhmalbaf and French film critic Thierry Meranger.
