Alfred Ehrhardt (1901 – 1984), a student of Kandinsky and Klee at the Bauhaus in Dessau, was one of the most important photographers of Neue Sachlichkeit in the 1930s. Developed parallel to his photographic work, his films brought him numerous national and international awards. Nevertheless, his work, which was closely related to the avant-garde of the 1920s, was forgotten. The film Nature Before Us is a rediscovery of Ehrhardt’s work and it explores his view of the landscape and the natural world in relation to our contemporary understanding of nature in an era of environmental crisis. The natural, unintended beauty that Ehrhardt reveals us, his ability to show nature as an artist, satisfies our longing for transcendence and reminds us to treat creation with reverence.
